DHSI Chairs and Deans: “DH at Liberal Arts Colleges”
Tuesday, 8 June 2021, 12 – 1 pm PST
Speakers
Collaboration is essential in DH, especially at liberal arts colleges, where you’re less likely to have a dedicated DH lab to guide and support your projects. To uphold this value, we collaborated on this presentation:
- Suzanne Churchill, Professor of English, Davidson College
- Maurice Norman, Digital Projects Fellow, Davidson College Library
- Sundi Richard, Assistant Director for Digital Learning, Davidson College
Generative Question
“Big” DH initiatives seem mostly in the realm of large universities or professional organizations. How can liberal arts colleges learn from these models and adapt them to a smaller scale and limited resources?
Part I: Consider (12 minutes)
We will each present a “BIG” digital project and explain how it inspired a DH project at a LAC.
- Snow Fall inspired Mina Loy: Navigating the Avant-Garde
- Can we design scholarly narratives that are as immersive, enjoyable, & accessible as “Snow Fall”?
- 45 Stories of Consent on Campus informed the Epilogues Project
- Can we use interactive text to tell personal stories publicly as well as ethically?
- Taller Electric Marronage inspired Stories (Yet) to Be Told
- How might we use digital refuge in our Digital Humanities practice?
- How might we craft our own creative digital identity?
- How might we craft narratives and meta-narrative to bind the disparate elements, projects, and stories into a larger program or story?
Part 2: Connect (12 minutes)
In breakout groups, explore one of these projects, discuss how it might serve as a model for a project at your institution, and publish your ideas and questions in the comment section.
Part 3: Ignite (25 minutes)
Presenters will ask each other a single question, popcorn style, followed by open Q & A.
